Gostujoče predavanje bomo dopolnili še s kratkim predavanjem Geologija v slovenskem šolskem sistemu – aktualno!, avtorjev Roka Brajkoviča, Mojce Bedjanič, Neže Malenšek Andolšek, Matevža Novaka, Nine Rman in Petre Žvab Rožič. Predstavili bodo predlog popravkov in dopolnitev geoloških vsebin v obstoječih učnih načrtih v slovenskih osnovnih šolah in splošnih gimnazijah.
Geology in schools – how it used to be and how it is today in Croatia
Karmen Fio Firi, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, University of Zagreb Faculty of Science, Department of Geology, Horvatovac 102b, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia
Lecture abstract:
Until the middle of the 20th century, Geology – as one of the fundamental natural sciences – was present as a subject in Croatian schools. As early as the end of the 19th century, available geology textbooks were published in German, and later in Croatian and languages of the surrounding countries. However, since 1955/1956, Geology was no longer present as a subject, and it was only taught in a few schools with a program that required this kind of knowledge. In 2003, Natural Science high schools were introduced in Croatia with the idea that Geology should be taught as a subject in the 4th grade. However, the realization of this idea began in 2020, when the preparation of the curriculum started. The subject Geology was introduced in the 4th grade of Natural Science high schools in the school year 2021/2022. Due to lack of recent literature in Croatian language, a group of Assistant Professors from the Department of Geology of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Science (Karmen Fio Firi, Katarina Gobo, Frane Marković, Maja Martinuš, Zorica Petrinec and Kristina Pikelj) prepared a Geology textbook in cooperation with the Školska Knjiga publisher which was released at the beginning of the school year 2023/2024.
Lecturer presentation:
Karmen Fio Firi is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geology, University of Zagreb Faculty of Science, where she has been working since 2006. She received her doctorate in 2010 on the topic of extinction at the Permian-Triassic boundary and evidence of this event in Croatia. She is a lecture in charge for several paleontology courses for students of the Geology and Biology Departments of the Faculty of Science and students of the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, as well as the course dealing with scientific work and writing. She is an active member of the Croatian Geological Society.
To hear more on how the whole journey went, visit the hybrid lecture that will be held on January 30, 2024 at 3 p.m. in the premises of the Department of Geology, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana (Aškerčeva 12, 1000 Ljubljana, room 209) and via virtual platform Teams (Click here to join the meeting).
We will complement the guest lecture with a short lecture Geology in the Slovenian school system – Current developments!, by Rok Brajkovič, Mojce Bedjanič, Neže Malenšek Andolšek, Matevža Novak, Nina Rman and Petra Žvab Rožič. They will present a proposal for corrections and additions to geological content in existing curricula in Slovenian primary schools and general high schools. It is a proposal prepared by a working group of geologists within the Slovenian Geological Society, Section for the Promotion of Geological Science.
